Fatalities Confirmed in Omaha Plant Fire and Building Collapse

January 20, 2014 - 4:11pm

Officials have confirmed there are fatalities in a fire and partial building collapse Monday morning at an Omaha animal feed processing plant.  They are not saying how many fatalities.

Interim Omaha Fire Chief Bernie Kanger said 38 people were inside the International Nutrition plant when the fire and collapse occurred Monday morning. Ten were taken to hospitals and four are in critical condition.

Kanger said one firefighter was among those injured. At least two of the injured were sent to a burn center in Lincoln.

Kanger said Nebraska Task Force 1 Urban Search and Rescue has arrived on the scene.  He said by mid-afternoon the effort had switched from a rescue to a recovery operation.  Authorities have not yet cleared the building.  Kanger said the plant is unstable, so rescuers must work deliberately to ensure their safety.

The fire that started around 10 a.m. has been extinguished.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but Kanger says there were no hazardous chemicals at the plant.
