Snowstorm Sweeps Across Nebraska

February 21, 2013 - 1:06pm

A major winter snowstorm has moved across Nebraska Thursday afternoon, making travel difficult.  3-8 inches of snow fell in parts of western and central Nebraska overnight.  The snow is expected to fall throughout much of the state throughout the day and into the night.

The Nebraska State Patrol says blowing snow and icy road conditions contributed to a fatal crash on Interstate 80 Wednesday afternoon near Giltner.  19-year-old Kristina Leigh Anne Allen of Callaway was killed when an eastbound vehicle spun out of control, crossed the median and hit the westbound car driven by Allen.  The driver of the other vehicle was not injured.

The State Patrol is not recommending travel in Nebraska.  They say if you do have to drive, be sure to wear your seat belt, reduce your speed and use extreme caution.  Also, monitor road conditions closely.

Many businesses and schools across the state, including ones in Omaha, Lincoln, Kearney, Grand Island and Hastings, are closed today.  The University of Nebraska and other universities and colleges in the state cancelled classes Thursday.
