LSO LIVE: 720

For one of his three Oscar acceptance speeches, Dimitri Tiomkin thanked Brahms, Strauss, Beethoven and Rimsky-Korsakov. Tiomkin’s Russian training certainly shows on this CD of his film scores, with colorful orchestrations a la Rimsky-Korsakov and the lush romanticism of his teacher, Glazunov. But you also get the desired quality of movie music: emotionally direct melodies and warm lyricism. And so you get quite the range in this selective survey, from early pop chart hits to sumptuous washes of orchestral glory! Tiomkin is known for scoring Alfred Hitchcock films – Dial ‘M’ For Murder represented here – and westerns like The Alamo, Giant, and of course High Noon, which critics argue was saved by Tiomkin’s smash-hit song from the score, Do Not Forsake Me. Both this and the TV series opener, Rawhide, are admirably sung by Andrew Playfoot, while Whitney Claire Kaufman does justice to Wild is the Wind and Land of the Pharaohs. They combine for the lovely duet, Thee I Love, from Friendly Persuasion But this CD is also full of delightful surprises like Cyrano de Bergerac, The Old Man and the Sea, and The Fall of the Roman Empire. The London Symphony Orchestra under Richard Kaufman plays with spirited elegance. The London Voices add just the right amount color in several of the works as well.
