Mind Over Murder: Search Warrants
The case of Roger Van provides a good example of how a search warrant can yield evidence providing valuable insight into the crime and the criminal. Van, a seemingly ordinary florist in Wayne, Neb., recruited a man from Texas to become his slave, living in a basement dungeon. It started as a consensual relationship but as the torture became more sadistic, the slave begged to be released. Van refused.
Below are excerpts of the actual search warrant filed by the Wayne Police Department's Lt. Phil Shear. The warrant was prepared with the insight of Gary Plank who was, at the time, a criminal profiler with the Nebraska State Patrol.
