After attending a college in her home state, KT Sullivan left her family gospel group behind so she could travel to Italy, and then to California, to study opera. It was recordings by the well-known Broadway musical vocalist Barbara Cook that influenced Sullivan toward the musical path she followed. By the mid '80s Sullivan was performing off-Broadway in New York, and doing a lot of work in cabaret shows. In 1993 she recorded her debut album, Crazy World, under the DRG label. The album won good reviews with numbers like "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry," "Just One of Those Things," and "He'll Make Me Believe That He's Mine." She also received the notable MAC award for Outstanding Female Vocalist that year. Other DRG label recordings followed the successful debut album Crazy World. Sing My Heat was released in 1995. In Other Words hit the store shelves two years later, and The Sweetest Sounds showed up for the new millennium, with tracks like "The Gentleman Is a Dope," "Love, Look Away," and "He Was Too Good to Me."
