Frederic Chopin

Frederic Chopin (1810-1849) was one of the great specialists: everything he wrote involved the piano, and most of it was solo music for that instrument. Within this limited framework, Chopin went on to become one of the immortals of music by combining the dance rhythms of his native Poland, the polyphony of J. S. Bach, the long lyrical melodies of Italian opera, a sophisticated harmonic language, and rigorously imaginative keyboard writing. A fastidious but frail man wracked by poor health, he nevertheless lived a colorful life in the intellectually stimulating environment of early 19th-century Paris.
