Although not located at the center of the scientific world, Nebraska has a number of resources on hearing and hearing-related problems. Take, for instance, the Boys Town National Research Hospital (BTNRH, pictured at the right), which has an international reputation for excellence for the work of its Center for Ear, Hearing and Balance Disorders.

The University of Nebraska's Barkley Memorial Center houses the university's Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders and provides a number of useful services for Nebraskans.

The Nebraska Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing provides a variety of services for the state, including the collection of data and disseminate of information to Nebraskans who have a hearing loss, monitoring and assessing services available for hard of hearing and deaf people (and assisting them in securing these services), and helping promote awareness of other services available at the state and national level for deaf and hard-of-hearing Nebraskans.

The comments of Dr. Patrick Brookhouser, Director of BTNRH, are featured prominently at several points in Deafening Sound. Click on the Real icon below to hear Dr. Brookhouser's comments on the effects of very loud sounds, such as those from boom cars, on human hearing.
