Times Square at Night
(1970)
At Joslyn Art Museum, Times Square at Night is George Segal's tribute to urban life. Segal, a pop art icon of the 1960s, celebrates routine daily moments as extraordinary cultural expressions. His trademark is crafting plaster castings of real human figures - molded upon friends and acquaintances - and juxtaposing them in mixed media tableaus to reflect his view of urban lifestyle. Times Square at Night depicts a busy, yet lonely street, highlighted by ghostly castings of two isolated men. By setting them against brightly backlit signs of a pancake restaurant and an adult movie theater, the scene provides wry commentary of the American consumer culture. Segal's pioneering sculpture is an art treasure of Nebraska at Joslyn Art Museum.
