Food
at this Exit
Nebraska
used to be known as "The
Beef State." In many areas it still is, but that does not mean
beef is the only thing on the culinary menu.
Granted,
the classic Reuben Sandwich is based on corned beef and was invented
in Omaha (notwithstanding the whining of some New York writers who
think it was invented on 58th Street in Manhattan). We
have our version of the recipe on this page.
Nebraskans
are also fond of sweet things, from Kool Aid -- invented in
Hastings -- to deserts. In 1951, a young mother from Holdrege,
Nebraska, Betty Cooper, "stole" a recipe from her Swedish
neighbor, apapted it and renamed the recipe "French Silk Pie."
She entered it in the third-annual Pillsbury Bake Off and won "Best
of Class." Restaraunts around the world picked it up. We
have the French Silk story and the recipe.
And
finally, we wanted to provide a guide to some of the better places
to eat around the state -- places that may serve more than just
the best beef anywhere. So, we're offering A
Videographer's Guide to Culinary Nebraska. Our videographers
travel tens-of-thousands of miles across the state shooting stories
for programs like Next Exit. They work hard and each evening search
out the best place to eat wherever they are staying. We have their
highly subjective reviews -- and you can tell us if you agree or
not.
