INDIAN
CAVES
Named
for the huge sandstone cavity that is the main geologic feature
of the area, Indian Cave State Park straddles the Nemaha-Richardson
County line in southeastern Nebraska.
NIOBRARA
STATE PARK
Nature's
bounty is readily visible during a drive along this park's seven
miles of roads or a stroll along the ten miles of hiking trails.
RAINWATER
BASINS
Shallow
marshes fringed with cattails, bulrushes and smartweeds filled the
lowest swales, and to them came swarms of ducks, geese and other
water birds.
CENTRAL
PLATTE RIVER/CENTRAL FLYWAY
Approximately
500,000 sandhill cranes stop to gain energy from the fertile lands
along the Platte River. From mid-February to mid-April the cranes
can be seen and heard for 80 miles along the Platte River.
VALENTINE
REFUGE
Numerous
lakes, productive marshes, and tall grasses on hills and meadows
provide habitat for many kinds of wildlife. Blue-winged teal, mallards,
pintails, gadwalls, redheads, ruddy ducks, and shovelers nest on
the Refuge in large numbers.
CRESCENT
LAKE REFUGE
The
Crescent Lake National Wildlife Refuge, located in the Nebraska
panhandle, consists of 45,818 acres of rolling sandhills, the largest
continuous dune area in America.
PINE
RIDGE
The
Great Plain's ocean of rolling, grassy swales and farmland erupt
abruptly into the rugged country called the Pine Ridge. This unexpected
region owns an uncommon diversity of plant and animal life.
WILDCAT
HILLS
Located
10 miles south of Gering on NE 71 , Wildcat Hills SRA, Wildcat Hills
Nature Center and the Big Game Reserve are a picturesque blend of
rugged rock buttes and pine covered canyons.
REPUBLICAN
RIVER
The
Republican River begins at Haigler in extreme southwestern Nebraska
where the North Fork Republican and the Arikaree Rivers out of Colorado
converge.
