[Dorothy from the "Wizard of Oz"] There is no place like home.
The residents of Lynch, Nebraksa know that for a fact.
They've begun to share their home -- their sense of
place -- with anyone, and everyone, who cares to come
calling. It's a town that has heart...
[LeRoy Purviance] "We are a little slice of heaven here in north central Nebraska."
Humor...
[Nelson Dahl] "Broadway has nothing on Lynch on a Friday or Saturday night."
History...
[Kathy Purviance] "It's so close to where Lewis and Clark came up the Trail in September of 1804 and discovered the black-tailed prairie dog out here just north of town which is about where I'm standing right now. And hairy little critters."
These Hairy Little Critters are hand-made prairie dogs called
Lynch Dawgs. Why Lynch Dawgs? Simple -- because of
Lewis and Clark.
[LeRoy Purviance] Old Baldy is there to your left. Clark wrote in the journal that they descended from this mound and discovered this animal and they were so numerous of them and they spent a day drowning them out. And they finally did capture one alive.
Lynch Dawgs are volunteer effort by the ladies of Lynch who
gather to chat, to laugh, and to sew. Hundreds of the critters
have been unleashed so far.
[Joan Faith] Last year we had just got started and I think we had twenty made just to see how they sold, well they didn't even hardly make it to town and they were gone.
These Dawgs have become fabulous furry fundraisers for community development.
[Joan Faith] All the money goes to help improve the town of Lynch so it looks nicer for tourists.
The Lynch Dawgs have enhanced community pride. They are now being sold in neighboring states and the orders are coming in.
The people of Lynch are very proud of their Lewis and Clark
history. Old Baldy is one of the few remaining landmarks mentioned in the journals. We know the expedition stopped here. But if you ask for directions at Grandpa's Country Cafe from the morning coffee drinkers to Old Baldy, you might just get this for an answer.
[Coffee Drinker] Old Baldy? Right there on the end if you can just get him to take his cap off!
It's been nearly two centuries since Lewis and Clark took
their road-less-traveled.
Maybe it's time for your own voyage of discovery along the
trail to Lynch.
Why? Because...
[Nelson Dahl] "I can't imagine a better place to be."
