Juaniata, home of the Plainsman, the Coop -- a place where children can play next to wide open cornfields, and home to a state champion
Let's take a look at the word Champion. One meaning would be a person who has defeated all opponents in a competition.
Tim Scott is Juniata's one and only state champion.
[Lori Augustin - Juaniata citizen] "We have someone who won a state Championship Trophy here?"
[Dave Fritzke - Juaniata citizen] "I did not know that."
[Reiny Ackerman - Mayor of Juaniata] "We could put it on a billboard in front of the city hall. For...you know, for a while.
Okay, so it is the state championship for Grocery Bagging, but still a champion is a champion.
[Pam Connely - Manager, Russ's IGA Grocery Store] "Tim has been with me for gosh, two years -- two and a half years. The very first time I checked on his sacking after I'd been training him, he was squaring 'em up, putting colds together, you know, doing what I wanted him to do. And he had a just a natural speed to him. "
[Tim Scott] "I didn't really think anything would come about it. But I guess it turned out to be otherwise.
His true dream is to become a Champion in Tae Kwon Do in the 2004 Olympics. A dream that he has had, since he was a little boy.
[Cindy Scott - Tim's mom] "We started out with him running around as a toddler doing kicks and yells. His dad was into it."
[Herb Scott - Tim's mom] "I kind of realized that Tim was a pretty higher quality. I had Tim come out and spar me, next thing I know he hit me up side the head and I was flat down on the floor and he was going, 'Dad are you okay?'
"So we had to start looking for different avenues to get him trained."
[Tim Scott] "I've been going to every national and international tournament. I found out about the Olympic Training Center and camps that they have and I train there once a month."
[Cindy Scott] "He gives it his all for whatever he does. And that's all you can ask of anybody."
Tim's greatest accomplishment is something you won't find in a record book.
Let's look at another definition of a champion: A person who fights for or defends any person or cause.
Tim is a true champion in every sense of the word because of the love and respect he has for his younger brother Joseph. Joseph was diagnosed as mentally challenged when he was only four years old.
[Tim Scott] "Joseph, I've been close to ever since he was born. I've I thought he was the cutest baby ever and I've always, you know, I love him pretty much more than anything."
[Herb Scott] "We've instilled in Tim a value of kindness to others. And to treat others as he would like to be treated himself."
[Cindy Scott] "He's seen treatment and mistreatment and so he's had to grow up, I think, because of taking care of his brother. Which has made him very responsible person."
[Herb Scott] "He's always watched out for his brother and even on vacations. Joseph was out there in one of those boats and so was the owner's son. Well, the owner's son started hollering at his son to bring those boats in and stuff. And Tim thought he was hollering at Joseph. And I guess he really laid into the guy. And then he found out he was hollaring at his son, not Joseph. So yeah, Tim's always protected him."
Tim Scott -- State Champion Grocery Bagger, Olympic hopeful, and champion and defender of his younger brother Joseph. That makes him a true champion by any definition.
