Nebraska Navy - So You Want to Join the Navy?

Charles W. Bryan Info | Transcript | Segment in QT | Segment in Real

If you want to become an Admiral in the U.S. Navy you better start your career early. You'll have to work your way up from ensign to lieutenant to commander to captain and a whole lot more in between. It's probably a bit too much to ask for most us. But there is a great alternative here in Nebraska -- and it's a whole lot easier! You can become an Admiral in the Nebraska Navy through a simple declaration of the governor, and it's not as hard as you might think.

"It's just a special way to recognize milestones in people's lives for all sorts of things," said Regan Anson an aid to Governor Mike Johanns. "We have people who submit requests for people's birthdays, anniversaries, retirements -- all sorts of things really. We do get some unusual requests down here at the Governor's office, too, so it wouldn't surprise me what types of things people might nominate someone for."

But the big question is how do you nominate someone for the title of Admiral in the Nebraska Navy.

"We do have an online form on the Governor's web site that you can fill out," said Anson. "You can also send in a request in the mail and we'll send you out the form that you have to fill out. Or you can just pop by our office and if you have all the information that we need you can just turn it in that way."

Mike Johanns administration has given out thousands of Admiralships in just the past three years and they have more requests coming in every day. There are no strict requirements or guidelines to receiving an Admiralship but in general, most administrations try to make them available to anyone who they think would appreciate the honor as recognition for a major event in their life.
