Early Morning Drive - Patty Johns Info

Transcript | Web Exclusive in QT | Web Exclusive in Real

Patty Johns has always enjoyed life to the fullest. And for Patty delivering newspapers for the Omaha World-Herald allows her to continue to enjoy life as well as be a full time mom. Patty's work day begins and ends before many folks are out of bed. That leaves Patty with the rest of the day to spend doing the things that make her happy and fulfilled. Not only does Patty enjoy spending time with her children, but she also volunteers at her children's school and enjoys having the opportunity to be involved with various school activities.

To make this all possible Patty does have to make some sacrifices. Patty drives two motor routes for the Omaha World-Herald seven days a week. This occupies four to six hours of her time each day, delivering about 170 papers and driving up to 100 miles. This daily routine requires Patty to work hours between 1:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m., and on Sundays she even needs the help of her two children Mike, age 15 and Jackie, age 9. The kids help out between 2:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. -- hours that even many college students have often quit partying and gone to bed! The children insert the papers and load up the Jeep while Patty is driving the family car delivering the papers to the town route. Then Patty comes back home and changes vehicles to deliver the papers to the country while the kids go back to sleep.

Patty plans on delivering papers a while longer. In the meantime, she may enlist more help from Mike so that he can earn some extra cash during the summertime.

Patty is a native of Nebraska, growing up in Bellevue and working at a variety of jobs including one as a hospital volunteer. Eventually one of Patty's jobs transferred her to Arizona. She enjoyed Arizona but missed her family in Nebraska so she ended up coming back to the state she loves. Patty now lives in Waverly and enjoys collecting cars. She currently has two Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia's that she loves to drive on Nebraska's winding roads.
