If you stop in at Harrison, Nebraska's Sioux Sundries café, don't be surprised if the cook isn't eating the house special. "It's too much for me!" said Delores Wasserburger, owner and proprietor of the world renowned eatery. The house special features an almost two pound hamburger that has become a legend in its own right in sleepy Sioux County, Nebraska. And although Delores may opt for the smaller version of the hamburger when she sits down to eat, people from all over the world have stopped in to order the infamous coffee burger!
"We get a lot of tourists in here through word of mouth and travel magazines -- AP picked up the story and it's in all the papers even overseas in the 'Stars and Stripes.' We might get over 100 people in here some days. There was a big bike ride that came through here and we went through about 200 pounds of beef that day. I generally order about 1,000 pounds per month. I bought [Sioux Sundries] over 30 years ago and before that I worked here for many years. It's very quiet and laid back up here. It's very pretty up here in this part of the state."
Harrison is the county seat of Sioux County and is located in northwestern Nebraska. It is the only town in the county and its total population is less than 1,500, one of only 10 such counties in the United States. Sioux County is 2,067 square miles in total area, making the population density about .7 people per square mile, again, one of the lowest densities in the United States.
Delores AKA Queen Wasserburger, has lived in Nebraska her whole life and has no plans to stop making the coffee burgers. "I'll just keep serving 'em until I fall over."
