Almost Two Pounds - Transcript

Delores Wasserburger Info | What's in a Coffee Burger? | Segment in QT | Segment in Real

In northwestern Nebraska, towns get few and far between. Take Harrison, not only the Sioux County seat, it is also the only town in Sioux County. If you're headed in that direction, you might want to plan a meal stop, at Sioux Sundries.

Their specialty? Well, it's beef! What else? A good percentage of this beef on the hoof will fulfill its destiny in Harrison. A self-respecting steer could do much worse.

I went there for the huge hamburger I had heard tales of.

[Delores Wasserburger] "These are the regular cheeseburgers. We have a small cheeseburger and we have a coffee burger. The coffee burger is twice the size, almost two pounds of meat! If you're makin' a coffee burger it takes a couple pounds out of every ten pound roll we get."

It didn't take long to realize that the coffeeburger is just a small part of the big picture. The people who come here every day provide the real flavor.

[Local Woman #1] "There's some of us, if we don't make it here, our friends will call to see if we're dead."

[Local Woman #2] "Probably."

[Local Woman #3] "We meet here every morning for coffee."

[Local Woman #4] "It's the best part of our day."

[Delores Wasserburger] "Most everybody is real friendly. Everyone knows where everyone lives, if you come to town everyone can tell you where to go, and who lives where, and who's coming around."

[Local Rustic] "This town is so small we don't have a village idiot we all have to take turns. My turn is the first Tuesday of every month. You gotta interview that person, today is his turn."

[Doris Gushi] "We did have a fire and many of the ladies donated their time to help clean up after the fire. We were desperate to get the restaurant open again."

[Local Woman #2] "We sure missed it. I think she was closed a week."

[Local Woman #1] "Maybe two."

[Local Woman #2] "Maybe two?"

[Local Woman #1] "You could go down the street and it was like the town had died. There wasn't a car around."

[Local Woman #2] "It was strange."

[Local Woman #1] "Really spooky, spooky stuff."

[Delores Wasserburger] "Oh, I think we've had about every state and lots of foreign countries. We're famous, you never know who might pop in the door for lunch, everybody's welcome."
