The 2004 session of the Nebraska Legislature began Jan. 7. A "Statewide" e-mail survey showed a variety of priorities among state senators. The state's $211 million budget shortfall ranks high on the list of most senators. They don't want to raise taxes, so cuts are likely. Other issues are from the past, like casino gambling, cloning and lethal injection. But several big, new ideas could take center stage. Changes in education, mental health care and child protection are all on the agenda. "Statewide's" Brad Penner outlines some of the top issues.
