"We are not trying to monumentalize, we try to be humane."
--Coosje van Bruggen

On crossing over...
"I really wanted to become a classical ballet dancer. And from my 4th to my 14th I was very serious as a dancer. And it is very ironic, but now I am wielding the pen behind my desk and hardly move. However, rhythm is a very important thing to me. And this idea of crossing over was never, never something that I was afraid of."

On teamwork...
"I read that Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy were asked how they got [to be] such a good team, and that the answer was, we really don't know. We just grew that way. And that is the same way with Claes and me. We never set out to work together, but we felt true chemistry between us in the evoking of imagery in the dialogue of art and writing."

"I am very conceptual, and I work with Claes very much in that first stage. Then sometimes, in the fabrication of something, he tends to get too much involved with the construction or with the engineering part. He takes what Jennings (the structural engineer) proposes to him and I scrutinize it, because I am not so attached to that situation."

"So in that sense, I have become very practical."

"We decided to work in public art, or rather I would say private art in a public place. We decided to do that because we felt that the museum was too much of an anarchistic situation."
