George Neubert
Director, Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery

"I think humor remains a constant in his work." -- George Neubert

On defining art...
"There definitely has been a redefinition of what a public art is and what a monument can be and the appropriate subject matter. Any public art is usually controversial even when the subject matter is not a common object such as a bat, a spoon. They have even broadened the spectrum of what a monument can be and what normally sits on a hallowed public site, as opposed to a horse and rider commemorating a battle or a victory. Here we have a sort of nonsense object of humor and ridicule placed in an honored position."

Art in a public setting...
"I think you can first look at it and you don't necessarily see "Torn Notebook". It looks like, in fact, an abstracted form. Quite baroque. Quite gestural." "Kind of a frozen moment of movement. And then as you begin to look at it, it then takes some time for you to realize in fact what it is."

"And I think when a work of art in a public setting is adopted by a community, it becomes a symbol that can represent that community's hopes, dreams and desires, ambitions, and we hope that Torn Notebook can take on the same kind of meaning."
