Hispanic Farmers on Broken Ground
August 13, 2012
The barriers Hispanic farmers face in starting and expanding farming operations in the United States includes the lingering effects of past government discrimination, current marketing and use of information, and their own agricultural traditions. Both the government and the farmers see the need for improvement, but reaching the end goal is a challenge. NET News and Harvest Public Media reporter Clay Masters reports and produces “Hispanic Farmers on Broken Ground.” The television documentary features Nebraska Hispanic farm owners, the author of a report on the current state of Hispanic farm ownership in the state, Hispanic students involved in a youth farming organization, as well as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack. The documentary aims to examine the obstacles currently facing Hispanic farmers in the Midwest and across the country, as well as look ahead to possible solutions for the future.
