The 7th annual Laurine Kimmel High School Art Exhibition showcasing artwork by juniors and seniors from 13 southeast Nebraska schools opens on Monday, March 3, at the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts in Nebraska City. The exhibition features 2D and 3D works created from a variety of media by more than 50 budding artists.
The works on exhibit are selected by art educators in the participating high schools: Auburn Public, District OR-1 Public (Palmyra/Bennet), Falls City Public, Falls City Sacred Heart, Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer Public, Johnson-Brock Public, Johnson County Central Public, Lewiston Public, Lourdes Central Catholic, Nebraska City Public, Pawnee City Public, Sterling Public, and Syracuse Public.
The Richard P. Kimmel and Laurine Kimmel Charitable Foundation sponsors this exhibition in memory of Laurine Kimmel, an artist herself, and graduate of Nebraska City High School. The exhibition is made possible through the cooperation of Nebraska Educational Service Unit 4, art teachers in participating schools, and the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts.
In addition to displaying the talent and hard work of area students, the Laurine Kimmel High School Art Exhibition program provides participating schools with monetary allowances to support art education in their classrooms. The program also gives individual students the opportunity to receive special recognition through merit awards selected by an independent juror and the people’s choice awards voting that takes place through the duration of the exhibit.
A reception in honor of all of the students, their families andSy art teachers is open to the public on Thursday, April 3, from 5 - 7 p.m. in conjunction with a First Thursday Open Studio event at the Center. The exhibition closes Saturday, April 26. The Center will be open for special hours from noon to 5 p.m. that day as part of Nebraska City’s annual Arbor Day Celebration.
The Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts is located at 801 3rd Corso in Nebraska City and is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Appointments at other times are encouraged: please call ahead.
