ELDERCARE
How will I live the rest of my life?
Many people assume that they will always be healthy
and able to live on their own. But statistics
say that two out of five Nebraskans have a family
member or friend who has used long-term care services
in the past five years. As people live longer
and need more assistance, many questions arise:
about living options, financial needs, the strains
that can be created and the support services that
can help people deal with them. The most recent
presentation in the Nebraska Connects
series is an hour-long call-in special intended
to offer assistance to people grappling with these
questions now and in the future. NPRN will also
carry the program on air.
Co-hosts Bill Kelly, NETV executive producer
for news, and Hope Stockwell, NPRN announcer and
hospice volunteer, will be joined by a panel of
guests including Donna Washburn, ElderCare specialist
with Aging Services/ElderCare Connection at the
Lincoln Area Agency on Aging; Diane Rolfsmeyer
– Caregiver; and George Kahlandt –
financial specialist with Health and Human Services.
A phone bank from area agencies will assist callers
directly as well as pass on questions for the
panel to answer on-air.
Two videotaped segments highlight innovative
solutions to common problems for seniors and their
families. In Deweese (a small community near Hastings),
local residents recognized a need for home delivered
meals for their elderly citizens. Lavon Black,
a 75-year-old widow whose sons live in Fairbury,
receives nutritious meals prepared by Al and Joan
Cook, owner-operators of the Horseshoe Diner in
Deweese, and delivered by a friendly volunteer,
on this day, Marilyn Schumm. Faye Mullen, of Clay
County Senior Services, worked with residents
to develop the program and discusses its success.

The second video segment highlights the adult
day care program at Madonna Rehabilitation Center
in Lincoln through the experiences of Lincoln
business owner Rhonda Brown and her mother Dorthea
Gariepy. The program provides Brown the time she
needs to take care of her business and the peace
of mind of knowing her mother is well taken care
of. Also featured are Madonna staff members Sandy
Bliss and Christa Yoakum and chaplain Steve Werner.
